stress and anxiety levels among architecture students

Students of architecture experience high levels of stress and anxiety which can sometimes lead to a total breakdown. Many students/former students concur with this and the problem just seems to be getting worse. Research is even being carried out to find out why architecture students appear to suffer more than in other subjects.

My own conclusion as to why the course is so stressful is that shock results can be dished out at the last moment and for this reason students are made to feel anxious right up to the very end when the marks are delivered. And if a student is failed and told to "Repeat the year", which happens regularly, their stress levels will remain high for considerably longer.

No matter what marks students receive on projects throughout the year, what marks they get in their exams, whether they have passed their dissertation, they can still be failed at the end of the year. All previous marks can be sweep aside and a completely arbitrary mark awarded. A similar system seems to operate in all the architecture schools throughout the uk. This is the system of marking project work that the RIBA have "validated"; they have no say in how architecture schools are run. The truth is that architecture schools are answerable to no one.

Read Reason 7: The marking system on all RIBA accredited courses isarbitrary taken from 15 Reasons NOT to study Architecture.
